Louisville IH's?

How can you determine if an IH tractor is a Louisville model? Which ones were built there? Is there a serial number run somewhere, or??

Thanks,

Moki

Moki - Only reliable way to determine a Louisville is by the serial number.

Louisville serial numbers are in the format L5xxxxx ("L" + 6 digits, the first digit always a "5")

Farmall Works SM's have no prefix letter and will be 3, 4 or 5 digits long.

If it has a readable serial plate its easy. Louisville ones have a L before the serial # and the rest have a F. If the serial is 6 numbers, its a Louisville. If no serial #, there's no way to tell. On stage 2 most farmall built ones have holes drilled and tapped in bosses on left side of clutch housing and most louisville don't. But like about everything IH you can't depend 100% on that.

Disreguard my post I mistakenly thought you were asking about Super M tractors. Other models will be different. There's a listing of louisville models on the web, but I don't know how to put you there now.

if i recall alot of the smaller tractors were made there like the super a and super c's not sure about the cub, a, b and c though have to refresh my mind with some reading

All SA, C, SC, Cubs, 100, 130, 200, 230, 140's were built in Louisville. 240, and 404 may have been but I am not sure. Some Super M's were also built there. Some 444's were assembled there. I am sure there are others since the Tractor Works at Louisville was the largest tractor factory in the world.

May have been a few of the last A and B tractors built there too.

I suspect Guy Fay would know a bit more about it. Maybe he will get in on this thread.

My previous post applies only to the Super M!

Other Farmall/IHC tractors produced at Louisville include the Cub, A, B and later the Cub Cadet.

Was all the serial tags a different color? The Louisville SM's Ive ever seen, all had red colored tags instead of the traditional black lettering. Was that a clue or?? Chad

OK, here's the real question (I think): I have a Super M with the serial number of 5555. I don't believe there is anything in front of the first 5 but I will check later today.

Thanks to everyone responding, I've learned something already this morning and that is always apprecaited!

I've never seen red tags. I'll have to watch for that; seeing is believing.
