Hi everyone! Purchased a 46 H over the weekend and it doesnt want to start even after I have replaced the 6v battery (it is a 6v system) cables and starter switch. It acts like it trys to turn over but just doesn"t have the juice. I pulled the starter off and used jumper cables to see if it spins which it did.

The farmer had a hard time getting it to start because the battery was bad(they got the tractor from a older farmer that they knew who passed away so they didn"t know too much about it either. )He had to jump it but finally it started and ran just fine only a slight puff of black smoke when it started.. then none. I don"t know much about the H so any and all suggestions are welcome!! Thanks! -Mark

Assuming you replaced all the cables (not just some of them) with replacements that are heavy enough, you might have a bad ground. Did you clean all the connections down to shiny metal?

I replaced the main battery cables, I have yet to replace the rest of the smaller wiring on the tractor. I replaced it with 1 gauge wire. When I got the tractor it"s positive ground was connected to a bolt right by the battery on the frame. (next to the starter). I read that it should be on one of the starter mounting bolts so i did that. I suppose i could try getting some of the paint off where that bolt holding the ground mounts and perhaps that will help? Thanks

1 guage won't cut it on a 6 volt system. Replace them again with 00 and make sure the connections are down to clean shiney metal.

One other thing to think about is the back to the starter. Did you use a 12V battery to jump it with? Because a 12V battery will spin a 6V starter pretty fast, even if it is weak. I've been down this road several times, sometimes some of the wire connections within the starter wear down making it drain an amazing amount of juice and act like you have a weak battery or poor connections. Good luck.

You need 00 battery cables and clean all surfaces and connections until shiny. That includes where the battery is grounded. Hal
PS: Use a volt meter to see if you're getting battery voltage to the coil if you have a distributor, you will need the ignition on. Rub the points with some 320 wet or dry untiil they're shiny. Hal

Where can you find 00 gauge wire? Isn"t it the same as 2/0? Also on external_link it has a kit for farmall H that has 1 gauge battery cables in it. Is that for a 6v farmall h?? here"s the link http://external_link/products/?view=product&product_id=24913 This is what I have but I just bought it at Tractor Supply for alot less.

Would a bad battery coil possibly cause it not to crank over? My H has a battery coil with regulator on top of the generator.
