how to time a 826 with 358 german motor

We have over 30 hours over the last week and no luck. There are more timing marks on this bosch pump and timing gears than one man can imagine. HELP... How does one get this engine timed?

Jim: One other matter on timing advance on a diesel, turn the engine the same rotation as operating when bringing it up to timing marks. there is enough looseness in the gears to put it off several degrees if you turn the engine backwards to the desired mark.
