Generator Belt Replacement on Farmall Super M

I need to replace the generator belt on my Farmall Super M tractor. It looks as if the water pump belt needs to come off first, but I don't see any way to slacken the belt. How do I do this?

Water pump pulley has a lock screw on it. You loosen that screw then tap the outer part of the hub to loosen up the pulley. You tighten those belts by making the pump pulley narrower and that in turn tighten up the belt. A good spraying of PB will help a lot also

If the fan belt is slightly loose, you can possibly feed the gen belt in & under the fan belt & turn the fan & engine by hand. This rolls the gen belt over & through the water pump/ fan pulley. I've done this several times & the gen belt has survived. I believe our SMTA's belt is over 10 years old now & still going strong.

Thanks for the information on replacing the generator belt. As for the lock screw on the water pump pulley, is the screw accessible without removing front grille, radiator, etc.? What is the "PB" mentioned in your response? I've never worked on tractors before so this is all new to me. Thanks again for the help.

Screw is right on the water pump hub and can be gotten to by either side of the tractor with out removing any thing PB is a spray type oil made to loosen up stuck parts

pb is pb blaster, available at any auto parts store. its a real good rust penetrating oil for the money. spray the threads on the hub up real good. if you have never done one before, completely remove the locking bolt. should be a square head bolt with a jam nut on it. the threads on the hub are separated with spaces, when the belt is tight enough, the stop bolt holds the hub on one of the spaces. opposite 189 degrees around the hub is a raised hump. you can get in there with a brass drift or steel rod to help tap the hub loose. may need a little heat if its stuck, but dont nuke it!!! here is a pic of the hub and my brass drift for loosening them.

after you get it loose and the belt off, brush some anti seize on the threads so it comes off easier next time!!!

Thanks for the info and pic on water pump hub removal. I located the set screw with lock nut and and also the "hump" which is about 180 degrees opposite the set screw. Mine isn't as pretty and clean as shown in your pic but neither is it badly rusted. Seems to have a layer of oil and dust so I hope it will come loose fairly easily. Before I start banging on the hump, would you please confirm if the hub has right or left-hand threads? Thanks
