My friends father passed away last month & left him a Farmall Regular. He would like to add an electric starter. He has small children & doesn"t like the idea of adding a chevy flyweel & starter to the shaft coupler. There"s a lot of room under that hood, could I fabricate some mounts & use a starter/generator off a 154 lowboy? I could tack another pully on his exhisting top pully. anyone ever done this?? Other ideas to add a starter?

(quoted from post at 13:14:35 05/01/09) Adding a starter is a good way to ruin a good peice of history

I agree.

if your gonna do it, do it right and get the Heisler setup with the correct bellhousing and flywheel. If he's worried about safety, then he shouldnt cobble ANYTHING together on it

Theres a guy here in England, has fitted a starter motor off a car with a belt drive to the belt pulley. Its a 'VEE'belt that throws off when the engine starts. He removed the Bendix Drive and replaced it with a V pulley and it WORKS just fine. I'm going to try to adapt the method to use on a Wallis 20/30. But thats in the future. His is on a Field Marshall. MTF

My first thought mirrored that of James and Old-F20; second thought [again, already mentioned by Old-F20] was heisler - but by the time you invest that much money and work, why not give it a good overhaul and time it perfect so it always starts after a couple lifts and never kicks?

If those options are out, what about the PTO? Plenty of room under there and huge area to mount a platform for whatever gear/starter/battery combination you'd want.

Thanks, definately a good option & worth thinking about. I thought that since the loboy was a 4 cyl gas & the regular was a lower compression/lower hp 4 cyl gas, that the starter off the 154 wouldn't have any trouble.

On our Regular, we attached a ring gear (from an M), to the belt pulley. Made a mounting plate, and used a starter from a 560 diesel. Spins over real well.

The difference is cubic inches... The regular has MUCH more displacement. Even with a lower compression than the 154 loboy, the cubes will choke the 154's starter. The Regular is 220.9 cid, 3.75x5.00 bore/stroke. The 154 loboy is 59.5 cid, 2.625x2.75 bore/stroke... The Regular is a 20 hp belt, 13.5 hp drawbar and the 154 is 14 pto. The difference is the torque generated. The Regular is a 2 plow tractor, the 154 is a lawn mower by comparison.

Not meaning to beat this post down, but it is clear the regular is a beast compared to the 154. Good luck on the starter project. I have seen some intersesting and professional looking starter projects on this site for Regulars, F-series, ect. Search the archives.
