Volt Gauge For 6V System

Are you looking for a voltmeter, or for a replacement for the ammeter that is in the instrument panel on your tractor?

The ammeter with the IH logo can be had from any number of vendors, including the store on this site, oemtractorparts.com, external_link and many others. Ground and voltage will make no difference in ordering -- only difference will be which studs you hook the wires up to on the back, based only on your polarity.

If you actually want a voltmeter, (ammeters are far more common) most auto parts stores have or can get them, often sold with a mounting plate. Most fit into 2" holes, just like the IH gauges.

I am looking for a voltmeter. I have tried all the tractor, and auto parts stores locally.
All they have are meters that read from 8-18 volts.

If you mean AMMETER, any ammeter that fits the hole will work. (Ammeters are insensitive to both voltage and ground polarity).

Tip: Get one one with a scale reading of 20-0-20 or 30-0-30. Ammeters with larger max readings will deflect so little on a stock 6 volt tractor system as to be pretty much useless.

Regarding voltmeters I'm uncertain whether "6 volt" voltmeters even exist. (In my 40+ years of fooling with old tractors and trucks I have yet to see one...)

And keep in mind a 12 volt voltmeter will NOT work on 6 volts because the the voltmeter's low scale stop usually corresponds to 8 or 9 volts. Means that on a 6 volt system charging normally (7.5 volts) the hand on 12 volt voltmeter won't even budge off the pin.

I'd stick with an ammeter...

You are looking for one to mount on the tractor, right?

I did a little googling and find that Lascar makes a digital one with 4v at the low end of the register if that helps. Apart from that, a quick look at the results shows panel meters that register 0 up to whatever you want, 1v, 15v, 75v . . . but they're more for sheltered panels with plastic bodies. Not sure they'd hold up riding around on a tractor.
