Exhaust Manifold Repair on a Farmall 400

I have a Farmall 400 with the threads in the exhaust manifold stripped out. The exhaust pipe just sits in the manifold. It stead of replacing the manifold, can the steel pipe be welded to the cast manifold? Or is there something else I can use to secure the pipe to the manifold?
Thanks,
Ron

Well you could retap it and get a new pipe made .Yes there have been many welded so have stayed some have not . As to what to use well 308-16 stanless MG 600 Royal 220 NI Cast just to name a few.

My 544 had the same problem. I retapped the manifold (running the tap in as far as it would go), cut half the thread off a freshly threaded pipe, ran a nut onto the pipe, screwed the pipe in as far as it would go, and then tightened the nut. It"s held for about a year now.

Like the other post says run a pipe tap to ckean the threads and get a pipe nipple and good chances are that you will be good to go. I have done that many times as there is always enough threads left to renew with the pipe tap.

Every tractor I have except one has been that way when I bought them. Re-tap the threads, screw in a new pipe, and all is well.

If you want to weld it, get everything cleaned up, start the engine and get the manifold hot. Kill it, weld it, and restart it to get it all good and hot again. I've done several this way and none have cracked. I use Ni-Rod.

Rethreading the pipe might work - I tried that with a 656 and 350 - it worked for a while on the 350 and didn't work at all on the 656. On both tractors the pipe had wobbling back and forth for years (decades?) and had worn out the inside manifold so there wasn't enough left make threads that would hold - even with "fresh" threads on the pipe.

Eventually I replaced the manifold on both tractors.

I retapped one on a Super C and couldn't get it to stay tight so I welded it as well and had good luck with a mig welder. Sam

Thanks for you comments. Did you leave the manifold on the tractor when welding it. Someone else mentioned to run the tractor till the manifold is hot, weld it, and then run the tractor again to keep it hot for a while. This helps prevent the cast from cracking. Sounds like a great idea.
Thanks,
Ron

I welded the manifold on my M with Nickel Rod just as has been said by running the tractor to warm it , weld it and then run it some more to keep it warm and it has been that way for at least 12 years, and I even flipped the tractor over and busted the exhaust housing on the turbocharger that I had on it and it still did not break the weld loose. The turbo is a different story , but the roads were slick and I was trying to get turned off the road when a brake band snapped and caused the tractor to slide a little and then over it went.
