IH 50 series to Case IH magnums

I have always wondered if they designed the CIH magnums,7110,7120,exc, off the 50 series IH tractors,5088,5288,exc. The hitch parts, pto, some of the cab, front axel are all the some and someone told me the transmisson were practially the same just redesigned it into a fully eighteen speed power shift. After IH went out and tennico took it with case, did not they want to use the larger case tractors and IH implements but that about put them under also and they redesigned the tractors back to the IH pattern and the motors a cummins overhaul off the old 504 case motor and called it a 505? I always liked the looks of the 30&50 series IH's and the magnums do look close to them.

IHC was close to introducing the Magnum before the buy out. They had a differant name for it tho. Case Tennico inherited for the most part a complete engineered tractor ready for production. Case dropped the IH engine and went with a cummins and a few cosmetic changes but the Magnum is basicaly all IHC.

When tenaco purchased IH , they already owned case as it had gone under years before. In the merger the equipment for mfg the power train of the IH 50 series tractor was moved to Racine. Then engineers from both sides of the isle built the magnum,(power shift was already in the works I understand). You will see ideas from both sides of the merger in that tractor. As far as the so called cummins engine, in 1980 or so, Case and Cummins entered into a joint 50-50 venture and developed the Consolidated Diesel Corp, and designed the new engines. It is totally different from the traditional cummins engine and the previous case engines. Cummins always used a PT fuel system which utilized unitized injectors run off the camshaft, and the new CDC engines is traditional inline unit injection pump. Both Case and Cummins engines rolled off the same assembly line with minor changes depending on which way the engine was going. The smaller CDC engine was being used in one of the case tractors at the time of the merger, never could get them case model numbers straight. After that many changes have taken place, the engine used in a Dodge for instance started out as that engine, as you will notice the six seperate valve covers. At any rate, when people say cummins, I think is appropriate to point out that there is actually two totally seperate styles of engines out there referred to as cummins when one is actually a CDC engine. I know the last years have changed the picture again and I don't keep track of them anymore but that is how it came about at the time Tenaco purchased IH.

Case went to Cummins in the late 70s or early 80s and asked them to build a motor capable of so much power, torque, and several other requirements for use in their industrial equipment. That is where the B series was born, and one of the requirements was that they had to run tilted in any direction at 45 degrees or more.

If you ever see a 7488, look closely at the rearend, externally, they are the same as the magnum.

We had a 7488 in the shop on display one afternoon when IH was introducing them, same trans, final drive and engine as 50 series tractors. On another note, when Case took over the reins, they told all dealers they would never mfg an articulated 4 wh dr tractor. In 1997, I believe, they bought out Steiger and I was at their first service meeting in Fargo. They needed to get a better share of the market.
