1066 question

Was talking with my retired uncle this morning, and he said he is having problems with the steering on his 1066. When driving down the road steering is eratic, jumps back and forth. He doesnt notice any major movement on the front end, he thinks it has something to do with the hydraulic end of it. He just put a TA in it, and hes wondering if he didnt get something together right on it. He has put them in his 806 and 1206 before with no trouble. I was wondering if it could be the steering motor driven by the steering wheel or is there something else he could check on it to figure out the problem. Thanks for any help.

Well with out seeing the tractor and knowing what all he did it is anybody's guess . There is a lot more to installing a T/A then just removing nuts and bolts like some think Did he get his fingers into the MCV ?????? did he shim the T/A did he get all the O/Rings inplace ??? Did he set the pressures to what they are suppose to be??????? Everyone wants to save a buck , i can go along with that , everyone wants to fix there own , i can go along with that but when they mess up then they want us to figure out just what they messed up . Here again with out putting some gauges on it and checking this and that i am in the dark .

Sorry about that, didn't mean to ruffle anyone's feathers. I guess i don't know if he run any pressure checks or not, we were just talking tractors a bit after we loaded his sons calves onto a semi and he mentioned he was having problems with his 1066. He doesnt have a computer so i told him i would ask on here, seems to be a lot of knowledge on here so i figured i could get a few suggestions and maybe help him out a bit. I think he was heading into town later this week he will probably check with the service tech at the local dealer. I will ask him next time if he run some pressure checks, and what he came up with. He has been running IH for around 50 years.

ask your uncle if by chance he missed puting the little check valve and smalll tiny spring back in place right bottom corner of the mcv valve housing. if not, it can caues some steering problem or there could be some trash in the control valve. there is a small orvice in the valve that can get small trash in it that also can caues some problems. also on front of fire wall flow divider valve that driect oil to brakes and steering . when a ta is removed its very easy to get some trash in the system . as we all dont have super clean place to work.

You know what they call a situation like this, that s**t happens, and it does to all of us. The use of a gauge tells you very little, it is all in the interpetation of the reading. I won't attempt to diagnose your uncle's problem online as I feel I would need more symptoms to make an accurate statement.

well moline-guy i hope you found the problem. i well probly like you get beat around the head for this next statement but its raining out so here goes. now if you had had all the pressure test gage and all the other things there is a dam good possibalty that you wouldn,t have need to ask that question. now if you had said ih man or some other catchie name and not moline-man you might got a better answer or iif you had been allen from nebraska.. 90 percent of the guys on this board would been blooding there fingers on there key boards trying to get in on the answer and it be 10 pages of answers. maybe some one can explane it to me, why post if you are not going to try and help a person. if your not going to help some one, thing why post a statement that only berates a person.the ones i realy like is GET A MANUAL. dam it be nice if we all could aford a manual. butt most the question can be answered and some time just steering a person in the right direction is all that is needed. i dont think any one going to sue you if you answer is not right. now moline -man the orifice i was talkin about is idem 19 . go to the https://webparts.pvassociates.net/cnh/webparts/main.php ih parts search type in 1066 then under drive train then click 07-25A drive train multriple control valve idem 19. the check valve and spring are under hy section 10-03 idem 8 and 9. i know that you uncle has a multymillion dollar shop with dust control and a clean room for working on a t/a and other such project but i am sill betting that its as simple as a pic of trash someplace, putting a t/a in is work but it ant all that hard hell if i can do them cant be all that bad, and i dont have a clean room eather. and yes ben brown is my real name and i do live in western ky and i never post any comment where i wont ues it. my dad told me when i was a young that if its worth saying put your name to it other wise dont speak it.

Like I said, this happens to all of us, and sticking a gauge in there isn't necessarily going to tell a person a whole lot unless they know what they are looking for. If I would have had a good answer for the man, Moline or Deere , I would have tried to help him out. Jim (pete) Holan

I havent talked to my uncle since monday, he is retired and doesnt use the tractor regularly, so its not an urgent repair, i will mention to him the things that were mentioned here. Maybe he lost a piece, i guess i dont know. He is familiar with the machinees, but yea his shop is like mine and everyone else trying to scrape buy out here, he could have put something together wrong inside too, i am sure its not the first time its taken him, me or anyone else a few tries to make things work. I don't get to worked up about things, if someone wants to put in their .02 thats great, if not no big deal. I appreciate someone taking the time to give a suggestion or an experiance they had with a similiar problem. I go by moline_guy, because when we got a computer two years ago the better half told me i needed a handle, and i grew up looking down the hood of a vista g1000 MM of my dads and its still probably my all time favorite tractor. We also farmed with a few other g1000's and a few A4t-1600's back in the 90's. I have had a 1466 IH for almost ten years, it has a straight shaft in it so i don't have any of the TA issues that usually come up, and its been a very good machine for me and am actually going to an auction this weekend to look at another 66 series tractor. I do think responses on a screen don't always reflect the way the person actually meant it, but like i said before i appreciate anyone who takes the time to chime in if they got something that might help, even if, like in my original post i didnt give enough information to give a definate solution. I have an IT manual for the 1466 so i should read up more on the items you are describing, that also looks like an informative web site so i will check into that also, i don't particularly like computers, but i have always liked tractors, doesnt really matter the color, and i have learned a lot from the few sites i visit. Thanks again for the replies.
