No Cub Oil Pressure!

I have an older 1950"s International Cub LoBoy that I use for mowing the grass. On startup this spring, I backed it out of the barn and saw no oil pressure on the gauge, so I shut if off. I have never had this problem before. I checked the oil as it was changed at the end of last year, and is up to the full line. It also had a new filter with only a few hours on the oil and filter. I remember hearing somewhere about the Cubs having a hard time priming the pump after they sit for awhile. How do I reprime the system? Can I take the top off the oil filter and fill it up from there? I don"t see any plugs or any way to get into the oil gallery?

There is a socket head setscrew looking plug behind the oil filter that leads into the oil gallery. Use a pump type oil can with a rubber chunk of tubing, to adapt it to the hole, to pump the thing full of oil. (it might take several cans, but it will precharge the system an assist to catching prime. Cub oil pumps live in the block, and cannot be removed as a unit. JimN

The rear of the oil filter casting tapers into the block right at the back of the engine block. I don"t see any place for the socket head setscrew. Is it in the tapered section of the oil filter housing? How far down from the top of the filter? Or maybe I have on older model? I don"t know what year it is. It is an older, red rounded tank and radiator housing with a fast hitch.

The Plug (it just looks like a setscrew) is on the block behind and a bit in front of the filter. Not very visible. An alternative is the oil pressure line attachment point. Either way getting oil into it is a necessity. You will be putting oil in it on the up stream side of the pump. A thick oil like 15-40 diesel grade works best. Good luck. JimN

Inside the oil filter housing there is a hole on the block side, pump heavy oil, 30 wt will do, into the hole with a pump oil can. Pump until pressure is built up, quickly replace filter, replace top of filter housing and start. Watch the oil guage. Repeat if necessary.

Remove the oil guage make sure the sw is off then turn the engine over with the starter to soo if any oil comes out the hole that will tell ya if the pump working. I rebuilt the engine on a 48 CUB and filled the new oil in the filter housing with the filter removed as the oil will run down thru the pump. When i started it had oil pressure.
