Well, I'm working on this basket case M diesel.

I dropped the oil pan and this is what I found this past winter.

Had the block hot tanked to look for cracks and here is what I found between the main bearings and the oil pan.

Question is: Can I still use this block, because the cracks (3) are in a non critical area? Lower skirt of the block between the oil pan and main bearings mount). The location does not look like I can drill out the ends of the crack easily.

That crack can be fixed pretty easily. My only concern is that there are others. I would have it crack checked using UV fluid and magnetic detection system. Magnaflux is one name. That crack will not be an issue, but others might be "deadley" JimN

Well myself i would look for a good block. As who knows how the line bore is now and putting money into a line bore on a bad block that may or may not stand up is a no brainer. With the cost for parts on them myself i would want it to last atleast a 100 years.

I doubt you are going to find a block with less critical crack than that. I'd do as Jim says, magnaflux, and get the block to a spray welder.

The cylinder head was off the tractor when I bought it... no anfreeze though...lots of oil was about the ice!

The crank on this one wasn't too bad. Only has to be turn .010" to clean it up... but I have not been able to locate main bearing that size yet.

Well i know that there are some .020 out there and that is the route you might have to go .I would give Clyde Burkshire a call and talk with old Clyde . As for the block if it is welded welding will distort it and then you will have to line bore . I think i know a little more on engine building then most . With getting on near fifty years of doing it. Find a nother block , check the cylinder bores for cracks and deck surfaces and you already know about the bottom . If ya can only find a block that is cracked down in the bore and the crack runs up and down don't panic they are the easy fixes . Ya just bore that hole out install a heavy wall repair sleeve and rebore the repair sleeve and put the sleeve in all fixed .
