What tire size?

Want to replace tires on my "new" MD, and need some advice. I believe it has the orignal rims which I think are 12". Is this correct? I was thinking of putting on 15.5's or 14.9's, but would these sizes work on a 12" rim? OR should I just stick with the original size which was 13.6. Any advice appreciated.

Correct. 13.6 was the original tire size. You can put 14.9 on that same rim, no problem. The 15.5s require a 14" wide rim.

Myself i think a 14.9x38 is a nice looking tire as the 15.5x38 is a short sided tire and they both need a 14 inch wide rim . I have split many rims and added a band to them and the 12 inch rim is easy to do . I myself made the mistake of putting 16.9x38's on my S/MTA just to go play with the boys . after i did it i hated the way it looked . One of these days i am going to pull them off and put the 14.9's on.

Factory tire size for the MD or M for that matter was the 11-38 or in modern terms 12.4-38. The stock rim size would have been a 10" or 11" rim, however who knows what has been changed on that tractor in half century. My personal thought would be to stick to the 13.6 or 14.9 the 12.4"s look small on a M. Also depends on what you want to do with the tractor to? Restore to new, almost new with some mods, pulling or just looking to use. Its all up to you what you decide.

I'm told the 14.9 was designed for a 12" rim. However, such rims are not common on the M's etc. Most are 11".

Guess it depends on the tire brand and what you have in mind. Just my opinion but I like the look of some 14.9 tires on 12 inch rims better that on 14 inch. Some 15.5 don't look to bad on 12 inch and some look like a balloon. Some 13X38 or 14.9X38 say on a 13 inch rim on the side of tire. When IH started putting 13X38 on some SM and 400 tractors they used the 12 inch most times. Never saw any but early IH parts books for early SM only shows the widest rim as 11 inch and tire options were 11x38, 12x38, 13x38. Prrobably if a customer wanted something else bad enough they may have furnished it.

Bruce: Every tractor tire manufactured today has stamped right on it the ideal rim size. That doesn't mean you can't use a different rim size. What the manufacturer is telling you is the ideal rim size will give you the best traction possible with that tire.

Believe me, I've seen some mis-matches that were a disaster.

Thanks to all of you for your responses. All comments have been valuable. Guess I'll go with the 13.6's I like the look of the 14.9's the best, but in my neighborhood, they are almost $100 more (each) than the 13.6's. The 15.5's are slightly cheaper than the 14.9's but I don't think they'll work on the rims that I have. Thanks again.
