2424 Question

I resently aquired an IH 2424. I thought that they were an industrial tractor but this one is painted red and white, original paint I think. Want to change transmission and diff. oil but not sure if they are two different compartments and use the same oil. I see a filler plug behind the seat and one beside the gear shift. There two level plugs on both sides of the transmission at the same height, but I don't see one on the diff. Any information or personal experiences with this tractor would be appreciated. Thanks Edward M.

Hi Edward, the 424 is based on the frame from B275 and B414. Trans and Diff are all same 80 or 90wt gear oil. There are at least 2 drain plugs, one on bottom of diff case below PTO, the other is on bottom of transmission. Filler plug is by gear shift, level check plug is on side of transmission case by foot rest. Can't remmeber if it is on left or right side.
The Hydraulics use CaseIH Hytran hydraulic fluid and is filled from plug behind seat. To drain the suction tube must be split at the join by gear shift lever.

Hope this helps

I have to disagree with Jim. You should use HYD/TRANS in the trans/diff. The diff and Trans are interconnected so use same oil. The actual amount of HYD/TRANS fluid for the trans and diff can be different.

424s with constant running pto use 13 gals vs. live pto which uses, i believe, 5 gals. (I don"t have my owners manual with me, so am going off memory.)

The proper level is approx 6 inches from the top of the filler plug located on the trans gear plate. The plugs on the side are not used to determine fill level. A common misconception that I fell for also. There are two drain plugs on the bottom of each trans and diff eventhough they both drain the same fluid.

The plug at the right rear of the seat is for the hydraulic resevoir. There should also be a drain plug there also. There will still be a little left in there if you decide to replace the filter located at the right front of the resevoir. It also uses HYD/Trans fluid. It holds approx. 3 gals.

Actually you may both be right. Transmission capacity is five gallons without front mounted hydraulic pump. It is 14 gallons for tractors with front mounted hydraulic pump without draft control and 17 gallons with front mounted pump and draft control. The front mounted pump is one that is installed to drive off the front of the crankshaft and is mounted in front of the radiator, not the small pump mounted below the distributor drive.

Installation of the front mounted pump involves replacing the plate between the hydraulic reservoir and the top of the rear frame. The replacement plate uses a stand pipe to control the level of oil in the hydraulic reservoir. Oil for the front hydraulic pump is drawn from the rear frame and returned to the hydraulic reservoir.

Without the front pump the steering/draft control hydraulic reservoir is separate from the transmission and the transmission can indeed have 90 weight gear lube in it.

Later recommendations from IH called for HyTran to replace the gear lube.
