I have read some posts on tighting this nut a very small leak to say the least there is no way to get to this nut with a drift or punch the angle just is just not right. Any help to stop the weep will be appreciated.
Paul.

Yes,two shots into each fitting that was my first thought and have followed the service manual for the many years I have owned this tractor. All service has been done to the book, even flushed the cooling system this passed fall, not much crud came out.Any more ideas?

The m's were supposed to come with a little spanner wrench for this purpose. Has a half moon with a hook on the end. I have a spanner that I use which is much better than original equipment. That being said, you can make up something out of a chunk of iron that will work, hook it in and turn the fan. I would not recommend beating on the nut. Nut may be froze though. Also, if impeller has much side play, you won't have much luck with out repairing pump.

You may need a different size wrench as the pumps are different, but on my Super H a 7/8 inch stubby wrench will work. You may even have more room on the SMTA.

I called my local IH dealer a smart wrench in his time and he said that the only way to get to the packing nut is to remove the hood, grill and support radiator rod then pull the radiator forward to gain access to the nut.He did mention the spanner wrench but this is only for use on the Ms and super Ms. SMTA is just packed to tight wich I find hard to swallow a super M is a super M.But I could be mistaken.Paul

I've been rebuilding water pumps and t/a's for 17 years. If you tightened the nut down and added packing and it still leaks? It probably needs to be pulled apart and replaced or machine the impeller surface and the landing surface it rides against so they are true to each other. I would also replace the bearings and seals if you need to do all of this. Water in those open bearings is not a good deal.

I also forgot. There are 2 springs that are under a T-Bar at the top end of the pump. Make sure the springs are still there. They pull up on the shaft and help keep pressure on the impeller surfaces I told you about.

SMTA does have a longer torque tube and hood due to the Torque Amplifier taking up some of the space... maybe the radiator is actually closer to the water pump?

I cut off an old wrench to tighten the packing nut on my H...

SMTA gas radiator is a greater distance from the fan and water pump than a gas SM. Also uses a deeper fan shroud than a SM gas, so the working room may be about the same. For tightening without removing parts. If the nut is not frooze up, Make something or put something that will fit in one of notches on nut and wedge agian one of the drive pins and turn fan in normal direction. Nut may be screwed in all the way already though. Another thing I do sometimes if I have fan and parts off and nut notches are messed up, is grind a flat on 2 sides of packing nut to the size of a thin wrench I have. If tightening is needed I put wrench in between drive lugs and turn fan.
