I have a Farmall md in good shape except I can not get it to run. It wont start on the gas side or on the diesel side. I have put a brand new rebuilt magneto on it and I dont know if it is out of time or what the deal is. I also took the head off to have it rebuilt. I had it revuilt it was cracked welded and pressure checked fine. so I know that there is air in the diesel side of the engine but I can not get it running on the gas side to blead the air out of the diesel side. I Have also checked the carb and it is looks good the the fuel makes its way through there. I have unhooked the linkage and held it so it was open and tryed to start it and still nothing. I am stumped was hoping that someone here knows a bunch about the old gas start diesels. It has been in the shop now for 3 years and I am ready to see her run again. Then the rest is easy. Any thoughts? Thanks guys.

This is not a putoff, it is just that there are fifty responses to this in the archives "Search For" box. Pull starting it on diesel can be very helpful. Use forth gear and about 6 miles an hour. It might take a half mile. JimN

If you don't get a response and can't find it in the archives...post back. Searching the archives is a great idea and sometimes it actually works. But since the vast majority of posts do not have working subjects that make them come up in a specific search, it is basically a hit or miss process. You could also try the Red Power forum. Lots of good knowledge over there too.

Short answer if you adjusted all valves and linkages to spec when the head was installed its just like a regular gas engine after that. If it has good spark at the correct time, fuel and compression it will run on gas. If linkages were not checked you may have intake butterflies not moving, starting valves not opening and the magneto could be grounded out.

You suggest that you put a rebuilt magneto on the tractor. The diesel engine magneto turns counter-clockwise whereas the gasoline magnetos turn clockwise. Do you have the correct magneto?

Yes it is a counter clockwise magneto. I think it is out of time and I read some of the other posts and I think I will try some stuf that they recommend too. Any other info let me know please. Thanks,

Does it blow air cleaner oil out the intake when you try to start it?? If so, you may have the mag 180 degrees out of time. Remember, there are only two cams on the points rotor, and 2 to 1 gears between the cam and the distributor. To fix this remove magneto and turn the drive 1/2 turn and reinstall.
