IH 300U Overheating

I have had this tractor and used it for the past 2 years for very light projects with out any real problems. Today it overheated. I think it has something to do with the water pump. It started making a noise like a bearing was going out. I looked at the manual (when I first noticed the noise but before it overheated) and figured that it shouldn"t make much difference and then it proceeded to boil most of the coolant out. I had topped it off thinking that maybe the level was too low and I don"t have a tight cap on the radiator so I assumed that I had overfilled it and it would stop steaming but after 15 minute it was still steaming so I stopped and checked and it was lower than before.
I am looking for some guidance, the fan was still spinning and it seems like it must be pumping water through the engine for the fluid to be boiling off so I don"t really know what to start with. The only thing I noticed that is different is the noise that seems to come from the water pump.
I appreciate any help. I would like to get all the parts I need in one stop and not just start replacing everything.

It was in the 50s today.

Sometimes a waterpump Impeller,(the part inside the housing) will come off the drive shaft. Thus, no pump action.

Do the normal checks:
Radiator uniform temp top and bottom
Is the engine block uniform temp. No hot or cold spots on block.
Fan belt slight play only. but not real tight.
could be:
need better cap
needs new thermostat.(probable cause. available at most autoparts stores.)
system plugged somewhere.
regrease pump at fitting.

How do I get a thermostat for my tractor at an autoparts store? I have replaced them on cars but have no idea how to get the right one. I would think I would need to go to IH dealer.

Any way to easily tell if it has come lose? Also how do you checck if there are hot spots on the engine or radiator short of touching them?
Sounds like I just need to take it all apart and clean it, the fluid looks good but I haven't done anything else. Given the symptoms I would guess that the impeller came lose but I don't understnad why it would overheat if the coolant isn't being pumped around, seems like it would sit in the radiator and the engine block would get too hot.
Thanks for the help! I was looking for a magic solution that would save me doing the work. :)

Matt,
Usually independent auto parts stores in farming communities carry tractor parts. Around here they do. If not go to the IH parts website and get the number and they can probably get one for you.

I will look in my parts book this afternoon.

Turns out that after all this time the belt became loose. I tightened it and everything is great again.
The one thing that hasn't ever been quite right is that there isn't any way to screw the cap on the radiator and the cap just sits there. Any idea what I need to do to fix this. When I looked at what caps they sell it shows that they are either 4 or 7 psi, mine is almost 0.
Thanks!!
