'49 H Transmission Bearings

I pulled the deck plate off my 1949 H today to see why the transmission seemed locked up. It appears that there"s some slop in the bearings for the drive with the gears on it for shifting. There"s probably about .015" of play and I"m wondering if this is what caused the tractor to slip into 2 gears at once. Is it typical for this shaft to have a little slop or should it be firm and not move at all? I"m assuming it should be firm. Also, does anyone have pointers or hints on taking that shaft out to replace the bearings? I"ll need to buy bearings also and not sure where to go for the most reasonable price and quality. Please advise, thank you in advance!

It is excessive by a wide margin. It is two shafts. an input shaft with two gears on it, and an intermediate bearing between it and the rear output shaft. The front trans bearing (in the case supports the front of the input shaft. the rear bearing supports the rear of the output shaft.
The two gears on the input shaft are a constant mesh gear, and the belt pulley drive gear.
Fifth gear is direct input shaft to output shaft.
The 4/5 sliding gear (first on the output shaft only engages one toothed gear, 4th) fifth is spllines in the front middle of the gear.

The belly pump, and clutch shaft, will need to come out, then the front bearing (frontward)
The shafts come apart (catch bearing parts that might be loose in the intermediate area between the input and output shafts).

Bearings need to be shopped. Some at CaseIH may be cheaper than bearing houses. Motion industries, is one name. Do not put light, or Chinese bearings in it. direct replacement only. NSK, Timken, Bower, and other quality brands are fine. The numbers (and part numbers from caseih.com search for parts) will help. JimN

I was working on this tractor with Al yesterday and .015 is at the (rear) output shaft bearing, out at the 4/5 gear end of the output shaft there is .125 worth of play. I'm suprised it ever even went into 5th. Thanks for the reply, from what I see, remove the pump and clutch shaft and slide the output shaft forward after removing the bearing supporting the belt drive gear. The belly pump seems straight forward, remove the cotter pins and the driving shaft should come out. Then support the pump and remove four bolts and it should drop out. Let me know if it seems like I'm missing anything or any more tips what to replace/inspect while we have this much torndown. Thanks in advance.
