Ok.. I'm looking for my next tractor and have some ideas of my own what might be good but really I don't really "need" a tractor but I have 2 already for just fun and one mows grass 100% of the time. But I'd like to have one with live hydraulics and a live pto just cuz.... i want it.. and with more power! I have not brand preference but I'd like to stay ford like a 860/1 series or maybe a Allis WD-45, or a farmall but not sure what is the earliest that meets my criteria... ?? thoughts?

What are the two tractors you have now?

I learned to drive on a Farmall 300 so I have a soft spot in my heart for those, also the first production IH (other than SM-TA) to come with live hydraulics, LPTO, power steering, etc which I suspect is why Dad had me first drive this and not the H. Just my opinion.

The ford 601's, Golden Jubilee's, and others are pretty good too. Just make sure it has all the options you want (LPTO, live hydraulics, etc) before you buy. I think Ford had those as optional features, especially on the Golden Jubilee so they may or may not have all that you are looking for. The 601's and later I believe had all of that modern stuff standard as factory equipped (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Don"t know much about other brands of tractors but my absolute favorite is the Farmall 300, or any 00 series for that fact. The only drawback to that is the old hydra-touches are backwards, back is down and forward is up. But if you are good at bending and welding hydraulic lines you can fix it.

I think the reason for being "backwards" is the controls were in front of you and not beside you. For where they were located beside the dash, it seemed right.
As for a nice choice for a tractor, a Super 55 or 550 Oliver is another possibility. I had a S-55 a few years back and wish I still had it... it was ahead of it's time for features... much better than the Fords, etc. of it's day.

We always fixed the the reversed valves by switching the two hoses around when we connected them. Always seemed to work fine on two-way hydraulics but might not on one-way cylinders.

I would agree that the Oliver 55 and 550 were far superior to the Ford N series. Could be pretty hard to locate one, but might definitely be worth the trouble.
