Farmall 656 generator to alternator conversion

"It"s easy" says the parts guy behind the counter of the CNH shop when I showed him my dead original equipment generator. Use this bracket and this alternator and you"ll be set. He scratched a quick wiring diagram on a sheet of paper and sent me on my way.

Well, I have the Alternator as good as mounted, but I could use some help on the wiring diagram. I"ve looked at Bob M"s online diagrams and I think I have an idea... but if anyone has advice to give, I"m all ears. (can I remove the voltage regulator completely, etc.)

I took a few photos including the diagram the CNH dealer sent along. I labeled all the connections I understand I might need to modify. Even a review on the theory would be great!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Your new alternator has a regulator built in to it. You will no longer use the your old one. Take all the wires from your old regulator and connect them all together. Take both wires from the old generator and connect them to the Battery terminal on the alternator. That is the stud that has the red wire on it now. The wire with the diode can be spliced into the wire that goes to the shut off solenoid on the carburetor.

If you want the theory behind the Delco 10si (which is likely the alternator your dealer gave you, do a google search for "alternator theory V15.0" Our 806D was converted to gen to a 1-Wire Alternator by a previous owner.I just converted it to a 3 wire so it matches our 966. Below is an excerpt from a post I had made here a year or so ago regarding the rewiring. I like this method better than the resistor, as it allows you to use the stock AMP light in the gauge cluster.

"I took a look at how the one wire alternator is wired in last night. He ran a wire from the Batt terminal on the alternator to the solenoid. From there is a wire that goes through a small circuit breaker to a box to run our round baler tying control. There is a battery cable running to the batteries (two 12 volts wired in parallel), and a wire that runs up into the factory wire loom to power the gauges, lights, key switch and added voltage gauge. To put a three wire alternator in, I want to run an 8 ga. wire from the alt. to the solenoid (the old wire is about 10 or 12 ga.). Then run a 16 ga. wire from the 1 terminal on the alternator to the original factory amperage idiot light and then to the key switch. Then run a 16 ga. wire from the 2 terminal to the batt terminal on the alternator."
