Water in the oil!

I've been working on an old IH Utility 340 gasoline, and I just finished rebuilding the engine where it threw a rod. Part of the job was removing and reinstalling the piston sleeves. Now my number 2 sleeve leaks water. There's no gasket or seal at the bottom of the sleeve. How do I fix the leak?

The bottom of the sleeve is sealed by a large "O"ring. It is in a groove at the point where the sleeve spigot touches the block. It is there and will take a dental pick and or other effort to get it out. New are available. Clean well, do not scratch the groove with a metal tool or the scratch will leak. Use a coating of dish soap as lube to install the sleeve. Pulling the head is the only way to get at it. Good luck, JimN

When you rebuilt the engine did you buy an overhaul kit? If so the new kit should have had new O-rings included. The o-ring can be hard to see in low light but if you shine a flashlight down in there you will see the o- ring located where the bottom of the sleeve slides into the block. The o-ring is located in a groove in the block (like stated) and not on the sleeve. The o-ring is probably 1/4" or so thick and will be mashed flat in the groove.

Yep, there was an O-ring in the bottom. I can't believe I didn't see that the first time, but when I took the #2 sleeve out and inspected the surface I saw it, picked it out with a flathead screwdriver and noticed that it is indeed damaged. I'm going to replace all four now that I have the engine torn down to that point. Thanks for the advice!
