I have a 340 international gas engine want to convert to diesel what diesel engine will work tractor is 1959 year model

The easiest one would be the D-166 as it was the one used in the 340 Diesels so it would be a direct replacement with no modifications adaptations etc.

The D-188 from a IH 504 should also bolt up but don't ask me what complications might arise. Best to keep your gas engine in view of high diesel fuel costs and considering the high cost of rebuilding a diesel engine.

340 and 544 diesels are very rare. You would be very lucky to find a usable engine from either model tractor.
