International 140 won't charge

Tom: I've never paid much attention to 140 that came from factory with alternator. Does it have an amp meter or volt meter. Over the years I've had 3 amp meters go bad. There was a difference, Farmall 300 stopped charging and engine stopped, Super A and 140 would run but not charge. I expect a bad volt meter may do the same. I've also seen amp meters not register but the system was charging. Do you have a hand held volt meter? Just to check tractor meter. Hook it between terminals of tractor meter.

It has an amp meter that I suspect is bad, but freshly charged battery will last a season and then it's jump off time. I checked battery with volt meter and checked alt output with shop amp meter,,old one not charging and now new one's not either using shop meter. Once I get it working, will install new amp meter in tractor, because it has not shown any life for awhile. I am at wits end...

Tom: Your new alternator will have built in regulator, plus necessary diodes, etc to make it work properly. If the gauge checks out then you must have a broken wire somewhere. I'm looking at the wiring diagram for serial number 57724 and above. According to that there in nothing at the dash as it applies to charge, start and ign, except key start switch, charge indicator and neutral starting switch.

If those are all good, alternator is new, then it has to be a wire between dash and alternator. I see what is called a resistance unit, (No.19 in the diagram) just behind the alternator, doesn't appear to attach to alternator, but it does have 3 wires to it from harness. Bear in mind the ignition wire to coil runs in that harness, and it may be a resistor to coil.

To bad John T or one of the other electrical gurus would jump in here. That resistor may have something to do with charging. If it were a resistor reducing voltage to the coil, it should only require 2 wires.

Thanks Hugh for your help. I have one other person tell me it may be broken wire somewhere. I had also thought about resister. Broken wire will be hard to trace and I am one of those kind of guys that if the light switch doesn't work, I start wanting to look for electrician. Before this is over I may learn a thing or two...I guess it is going to be one of those "roll up the shirt sleeves" and figure it out. You have given me some ideas...Thanks again.

Tom: Get yourself a test light and check out every wire associated with ign and charging. I wish we had someone more knowledgable explain that resistance unit. My question is it the same as a resistor that reduces voltage to the coil. That is another item you can check with the test light, where current goes from the resistance unit. Those wires should all be color coded.
