46 twine Baler

I just picked up a ih 46 baler this weekend at a local auction. it was the kind my grandpa used to have. i was just curious in wondering if anyone could tell me what mabe some of the problems that they had.

If you keep the zerks greased and oil in the gearbox, they're pretty bullet proof. The knotters can be fussy. If it starts missing knots, check that the knife in there is sharp and adjusted correctly and the billhook tension is correct.

Check the needles where the twine passes through, sometimes there is a groove worn in them that prevents correct twine placement. Use only a good Brazil made twine. I would get an operators manual the first thing.

I would find somebody who wants it worse and let them have it. Then go buy a New Holland baler if you want it to tie anything but to dry hay after it is no good for feed dry.

This IH 46 baler baled nearly a 1,000 bales last year and only missed a tie when it pulled new twine from a new spool through the knotters.

I bought a 46 baler and used it the last two years to bale a little hay. Had to put a number of parts in it to get it running. Before you are ready to bale you need to run some old hay through it to make sure it's adjusted right and going to make good bales. If it hasn't been used in a while then for sure you are going to need some time to adjust things and get it working right. You definitely need the manual to tell you how to adjust things.

The things I learned are you have to have a windrow of hay that isn't too heavy and the hay has to be completely dry; and you have to run your tractor in your lowest gear at about 2/3 throttle. If everything isn't right mine will miss tie on one side and if the hay is too heavy or too wet it will also jamb going into the chamber and the clutch will slip and you'll have to dig it out by hand and turn the flywheel backwards enough to get a run at cutting through what is left. This baler takes a lot of time and experience, in my mind, to get it to run right.
