M PTO question?

Hello all, started the M today just to let it run a little, too wet to work it any, just like to start things after they set, ok ok i was bored. The PTO started to slowly turn on it's own, i could stop it with my hand after making sure i could engage and disengage it alright. Checked my oil and it looked perty nasty and thick....possible cause of the problem? yes? no?

A "dragging" PTO is not unusual. Make sure the lever is fully disengaged, it may be binding slightly.

It has no brake on it, so if the oil is a bit stiff, it will slowly turn. I would change out the oil if it has been in there a long time. 80-90 gear oil is correct. JimN

if you don't use the tractor much when it is real cold out use 140 gear oil. it won't leak as easy and everything in the m's rear end is sixty years old.not real tight anymore.
