B died and won't start

The B was running well, then started to miss, blubbered on a few more cycles then died. No amount of cranking will start it.

Carburator seemed OK (new gas, no obstructions in the line) but swaped in another from my SA just to check - no satisfaction.

The magneto primary wire throws a spark across 1/4 inch when the impulse coupling trips and the timing is set correctly. Spark is yellow-blue - same as when I first got it started two weeks ago.

I thought that I may have blown a head gasket. I haven't got electric start, sooo I did a compression test by hand cranking (best I could do). All cylinders registered 60 psi.

Last possibility - the manifold had a leak on the exhaust side (I plugged it), but nothing on the intake side I can find. When it started to miss, I blew propane around the manifold, with no effect.

What do you all think - mag tune-up, new head gasket or manifold? Something I'm missing?

Thanks for your help.

Hold your hand over the throat of the carburetor while someone hand cranks the enginie and see if there's good suction on your hand. If you have another tractor with a belt pulley you can use that to turn the pulley on the B. Make sure its out of gear. Make sure its turning the engine CW when view from the front. Pull the rocker cover and check your valves to see if they're all opening and closing. You probably should pull No1 plug near the radiator and bring No1 piston to tdc on the compression stroke then see if both valves on that cylinder are closed and your timing mark is aligned. Something may jumped time. Your rotor on your mag should be pointing to the No1 plug tower too. Hal

If you hold your hand over the carb to choke it, you better hope it doesn't backfire through the carb, Could get a nasty burn. rw
