1066/1466

Was wondering if a 1066 and 1466 used the same transmission and rearend? I am looking at a 10 and 14 and i already have a 14, just was wondering if things interchange or if the 1466 has an all around different drive train? Also do the early white cab and later red cab tractors also use the same drive train components, or was there upgrades or changes as they went along? Thanks for any help and replies.

There are differences between the 10 and 14 pinion shaft, bull pinions, brakes, and differentials. Probably more stuff as well, but these I know for sure.

Also from what RickB was saying, I think the rear axles are bigger on the 1466. I don't think they made any changes on the drive train from white cab to red cab. I always prefered, (now this is me and I like most all IH tractors) , the 1466 over the 1066 but it also depends how much power you really need and what you are using the tractor for. I have a 1466 and 1486.

Thanks, i figured the 14 was built heavier, by just looking at them they look about the same, didnt measure the axles, but i bet the 14 is bigger. The reason i was asking, if it ever came down to parting one out, i was wondering if things would swap out between the two. Also looked at a few 1486's, and they are about the same money as the 1466's around here, but most look like they have been run a lot harder, but it would be nice to have the nicer cab. For most of the work the 1066 would be fine but for silage cutting and disking i don't think it would run with the 1466. I have had good luck with this 1466, after i had the engine replaced with a factory reman. The 1466 i am looking at is priced at 10,000, which seems high, but supposedly has had a rescent overhaul and seeems in overall good condition.They are simple reliable machines and the last few auctions i have been to they have sold in the 9000 range. It hasn't sold yet, but I doubt this 1066 goes much higher.

You said you would like to have the nicer cab on the 86. I am going to tell you one thing for sure, that 86 with the cab mounted foward with the fuel tank behind the cab will ride TEN times a rough as the 66 series. I know, I have both of them and I have a good airconditioner in the 1466 and would rather run it all day over the 1486.

Moline guy: If the 1066 is black stripe there is no difference. Black stripe 1066 rear end parts got upgraded to same as 1466.

On the power issue, there were a lot of 1066s came from the factory cranking as much horsepower as the 1466. I know my own 1066 dynoed 158 on PTO new, it was still cranking 158 at 8,000 hours. I know of many other 1066s that did the same. Shortly after I bought my 1066, I went to an IH tillage demonstration, I tried a 1566 on a big cultivator. Dealer made a point of asking how I liked the 1566. I said, "Do you actually charge more money for a 1566 than a 1066?"

By the way my 1066 went to 10,000 hours before it's first engine rebuild, some of those hours fast and furious. The 10,000 hours happened before tractor was 8 years old. At 8,000 hours I would have said the tractor was headed for 15,000 hours before that rebuild, however cavitation did her in. A lot of that use was two operators running 24x7.

The two i am looking at are both white cab 1066 and 1466, both are in good condition and run nice, i will probably stick with the 1466. I don't doubt the 1066 will run with it, i have had this one for almost nine years and am impressed with how well it pulls. I don't run the snot out of it, but it does get used harder than a 35 year old tractor probably should. Thanks for the information on the black stripe, its good to know.

I have never run a 86 series, i just figured they were probably a lot nicer ride. I have always like the looks of the 86 series, but i suppose being your ahead of the rear axle it would ride rougher. Dads vista G1000 MM is set up similiar to an 86 series tractor and it doesnt ride too bad, but i don't think it set ahead as far as the IH's are. The 66's loook like they are just easier to work on stuff so i will probably stick with them, thanks for the reply.

It is interesting to note the comments from people who have used both the 66 and 86 series of tractors on how the ride is worse on the 86s. One of the selling points of the 86 series when it came out was that it had a better ride than the 66 since you were no longer sitting over the rear axle. The one complaint I remember from most new owners of the 86 series was that they were harder to hook to an implement since it was much harder to see the drawbar.

I have always wanted a 66 series. I had a good line on a 1566 that the TA was out on the high side for $5500. I passed on it because my wife was expecting our youngest at the time. Wish I would have bought it...... If I fine another like that in MN it's mine!!!

Moline_Guy, that is a TOUGH looking tractor... What is that G1000 good for, 150 hp?

The g1000's are rated at 110hp, when dad first got this tractor back in 78 it had 60 over pistons in it and pulled like nothing he had ever owned. A few years later when he overhauled it because of a broken piston, he went back to standard bore jugs and pistons, and it still always pulled well. It only gets used for light work now, in the picture it was pulling a 24' chisel in some loose millet ground, usually we only pulled a 14' chisel and an 18' disk. Probably my all time favorite tractor, spent a lot of hours in that cab. The one advantage those old MM's had over the IH's was there large cubic inch (504) and slow rpms ( 1800 rated speed). They had a lot of torque and never skipped a beat over hills and tough spots. I do like my 1466, and its been a good machine, but that old vista is still my favorite.

Owen: Shortly after I bought my 1066 in 75, I guess the IH dealer figured I'd trade everything back to the old 300. Anyhow I often got oportunities to try new tractors, and yes I have to aggree with everything you say. Now my neighbor claimed if you add front drive and 24" tires to the 86 tractor that will smooth it out.

My own opinion is go articulated once you get much over 100 hp. You've then got a spot for 150 gallon fuel tank behind the articulation joint, the ride is superb, you do need a mirror for hitching, but you know something, once those implements got big hitching almost became a two man job. At least it was much faster with two.
