Farmall 100 final drives - axle won't budge

Need some advise on getting axles out of final drive castings to renew seals, bearings, etc.. I have the brake drum and shaft removed and removed the cap and bolt that holds the rear axle. The manual says to push from inside out, but mine won't budge. It looks like it may be tight on the splines on the bull gear, but I can't see in there. I have the end of the shaft swelled out from beating on it. It will never go through the bearing now. I am going to have to push it back and try to clean up the shaft and start over. Any ideas? Am I missing something?

You sy you can't see in there. Have you dropped the pan to let some light in?

If not, try that. The presence or absence of oil and it's condition may tell you someting about shat's going on. Those finals ar notoriously neglected and you could just have some crud caked up , tough it shouldn't bind as tightly as you describe. It may also be as simple as the weight of the bull gear being on the shaft, which you can remedy with the pan off so that you can take the weight off of it. That too, though, would be odd. If you've got the retaining bolt off, there shouldn't be anything left to hold it so fast that you'd deform the end of the shaft by beating on it.

I have the pan off. I should have been more clear. I can see the bull gear, but can't really get a good look where the shaft goes through the gear. Everything is nice and clean, although there was only several teaspoons of oil in either pan. I have both sides off. I havn't tried to remove the right side yet. A little gun shy now. I have done many Cubs and Super A in the past with no problems, but this one is really stuck. The shaft will move about 1/4" or so and stops when the gear hits the casting on the other side. I wonder if I put a little heat on the gear if that will help. I will give it another go tonight.

You have to "push" it out. I used a home-made pusher which is the reverse of a puller. I knew I should have taken a pic of that when i did it. Basically you use a big bolt through a piece of channel which is bolt to two of the holes that the dust cover is bolted to. i had to dimple the nut on the shaft and pushed the shaft out of the housing. I"ll try to take a pic of it tomorrow.

considering you are talking about 2 different shafts. are you trying to get the top shaft out or the bottom? the top shaft has a keeper if i remember right under the cap that holds the bearing.

the bottom should come out with the outside seal housing unbolted and the inside bolt and washer removed.

Good point.

Are you using a service manual? The manual will usually explain the order in which things come out.

Have you tried unbolting the outer bearing retainer and then driving it out?

Another, if it's still going to take driving instead of simply pulling or pushing, is to get a longer bolt to replace your retaining bolt. The one there is a 5/8" NF x 1-1/4". Get one about 1-1/2 to two inches long, thread it in all the way (so as not to bugger the threads) without the retaining washer and drive on the bolt head instead of the end of the axle. Bolts are much easier to come by than axles!

I finaly got it loose last night. I cleaned up the shaft end where I mushroomed the end and put the bolt in and drove on it instead. If I would have done this in the first place I would not have had any troubles. I moved on to the right hand side and it came apart with no problems. I think leaving the pan on and keeping the weight off the bull gear may have helped also. I like your idea of pushing with a bar across the casting. That may save some headaches in the future. Thanks for your help.

I think the pusher idea was EZ's, but glad ya got it out all the same. Were ya able to figure out where it was binding?

I think the binding was in the outside bearing originally. Then the mushroomed shaft stopped the shaft from moving further.
I started working on the transmission last night also. Do you have any experience with the transmission top cover and the shift lever? My 100 has a lot of play in the shift lever and is pretty loose. Can the excess slop be taken out by working on the underside of the cover? Is there any adjustment? It looks like the detent balls will come flying out and roll under a bench when being taken apart. I getting a parts manual, but don't have one yet. Thanks.

Nick,
The TC-52A Parts Manual is a must. I lucked out on Ebay and have an original. I"m working on a 130. Had to get 3 of the 4 shafts welded and ground down as the old seals had worn quite a groove in them. Next week I will be putting the tranny and the finals back together with new seals, gaskets, and a couple new bearings. Good luck with the 100, sounds like you are well on your way.
