3588 Issues

Have a 3588 with issues. First, engine overheated last fall and then water was getting in the oil. Any chance this could be a head gasket or other simple fix, or are we looking at an overhaul? Also, we lost first gear. Any chance that this is a bent fork or linkage that needs adjusting? Read on this forum once that this is most likely a nut of some sort that comes loose. Also heard that this wears out the housing and quickly ruins the rest of the transmission. Is this true?

YES in both cases . It's time for a major on the engine and the speed transmission needs to come down . and on a 3588 it ain't and easy job . Get the check book out .

If you lost first gear, the nut probley came off the counter shaft and droped down

And I assume running the tractor like this is doesn't help the transmission?

Thanks Vet. We kinda figured that. On both cases. On the Speed Transmission, is most of the cost in labor or are the parts just as expensive? I know the 2+2s are quite a project to work on but if it means the difference between a usefull tractor and a huge paperweight We might be inclined to take on such a project Ourselves.
