i would like to put a deisel engine in an H-farmall-- any ideas what engine would work ? i was thinking a 350 deisel but that is a little to costly so how about a 340 deisel?

What about a motor out of a 504 diesel. I am thinking it's a D188. I owned a 504 diesel about twenty five years ago and if I remember right it was around 45 hp

I'm wondering if the 504 doesn't owe it's parentage (and thus bell housing bolt pattern) to the Super C line rather than the H as the gas engined version uses the C-153 which is just a much modified C-123? Same story with the 340 I suppose? Sam

I saw a H with a vw rabbit diesel in it. It was owned by a young menonite outside kutztown Pa. It was a very professional looking job. It had a belt powered hyd pump on it.

About three years ago, someone from NW Indiana had a turbocharged diesel powered Farmall H or Super H at the big tractor show in Portland Indiana. As I remember, he used a Mitsubishi diesel that had come out of a small Dodge pickup - 1980s vintage. It was an extremely neat installation and sounded absolutely great.

thanks for the info--i have access to a 1.8 out of a 82 chevette --yes its a deisel--i will keep my options open!! i dont know the hp tho!

The only semi-bolt-in option is the diesel out of a Farmall 350. All else will require custom machined back plate, fabricated front engine mounts, etc.

If you wanted to get totally crazy, you could use the engine and frame rails out of a 460 diesel, 656 diesel, 666 diesel, or 686 diesel and go 6-cylinder. They share the same bell housing bolt pattern as the H-350 platform. Of course then you'll need to lengthen the hood and figure out how to install the H's front bolster...

Problems with an automotive diesel is the lack of a governor, and the engines turn about twice the RPMs of an H engine.
