MY HAIR IS GROWING BACK!!!! The A charges!!!

Well, I bit the bullet and swapped the A from POS ground to NEG ground. Also swapped the AMP meter wires and left everything else as it was a week ago when I was having "issues". Put the tractor to half throttle, started her up and BAMM! 10amps Pos Charge!!!! It's charging about 6.8V at full throttle and 6.7V at half throttle, WHOOO-HOOO!!! The AMP meter shows about a 2 to 3 AMP discharge at idle, but I can also damn near count the fan blades so I'm assuming that's OK.

Thanks for all the input during my "dark times"!

I'll try and post a pic or two when I get it all together (I'll more than likely need assistance with that as well, so you'll be hearing from me again)

Thanks again, Daniel

Congratulations and thanks for the feedback. By the way, if its a coil distributor ignition instead of a magneto, when you change polarity the coil leads (like the ammeter) need swapped for best performance. Of course, if its a mag it makes no difference......I take it when you changed polarity you re polarized the generator before you started it??

Why do you want your six volt system on negative ground rather than positive ground like the six volt systems were from the factory?

He tried for a week or more to make it so! The consensus is it probably has a negative ground VR that is not operational on Pos ground. If it works, it works. JimN

Unless it is an electronic regulator, it should make no difference whether it is used with positive ground or negative ground. Electronic regulators use diodes and transistors and thus are dedicated Positive OR negative ground.

What makes an electro/mechanical regulator positive or negative ground in the material used for the contact points. A regulator dedicated to either positive ground OR negative ground will have contact points made of different materials for longer life. A regulator designed for both positive ground AND negative ground will have both contact points made of the same material which results in a shorter working life.
