Tractor Vet or anyone else. 1256 Thermostat

The temp gauge on my 1256 barely moves off of the lowest mark. I have a mechanical gauge installed that I know is functional because I tested it. My temp gun says that with the tractor running at half throttle for 20 minutes with the radiator covered the temp at the head is 135 degrees and the radiator is around 110. What is the proper operating temperature for this tractor. I am thinking I have a bad thermostat. What are your thoughts?

Measure the temperature of the hose coming out of the thermostat housing or the radiator inlet. If the temperature is nearly the same as the thermostat housing, the thermostat is not doing its job.

With the amount of water that is bypassed thru the bypass hose they have a hard time warming up. But as i have never really payed attention to it as to how warm they will get setting at half throttle for a half hour i can tell ya this a diesel will not warm up like a gasser and for them to make heat they need worked . I know that my old I H 4370 Eagle with a Cummins would come up to around 150 if you had her running 1500 with the shutters open but if ya closed the shutters she would come on up to 180 . My dodge cummins will not come up to operating temp just running above idle and i know that the stat in it works as i put a new one in as i thought that it ran a bit cold . So if your worried then put in a new stat and see what happens . My worry is that they don't overheat.

Baelee, I have a 1256 that I use for light loader work. Mine does the same thing.Temp gauge works, thermostat works.About once a year I'll put her on a soilsaver or disc and let her blow smoke. That'll move the old temp needle.

Thanks Keith. I've only had this tractor for about nine months. When I got it the temp gauge in the dash cluster was shot. I like gauges so I installed a mechanical temp and oil pressure gauge to keep an eye on oil press and water temp. Up until now I haven't seen the temp guage move. I installed a new thermostat last night and ran her with the radiator covered for about half an hour and the needle came up a little. Temp at head was about 175 and radiator temp was around 115. I think I am okay now. Won't know until I work it though.
