Newer IH 885

Hello. I am looking at a Case IH 885 tractor. Are these a good tractor? Are they left over David Browns and can you still get parts because this 885 was made in England? The 885 I am looking at has a loader and front wheel assist. Was built in the late 1980s, ending maybe 1991. I put this on the Case board and was told to post it here. I was told this was a IH tractor. What is it a Case or IH tractor? Thank you and have a good day. Perry

They were ok. A late model will have centre drive Z.F. front axle, Rockford clutch and handbrake on the diff. Really early (usually IHC badged) has a side drive axle, Tiny Laycock clutch, and hand brake on the pinion shaft which was as much use as an ash tray on a motor cycle. These things were gradually phased out in the 885s production run. You WILL NOT find a David Brown 885 badged as Case IH, only as a David Brown, David Brown - Case or a Case depending on where it was sold. It is an International built at the Wheatly Hall Road, Doncaster, Yorkshie England plant.

We have an 885 and its one of the best tractors that we have. It always starts and has lots of power. Its got to have 7 or 8 thousand hours on it and still doesnt use oil. I think they are one of the best of the 85 series.

885 is an IH tractor, basically just an updated 884.

I'm pretty sure the basic design goes back to the late 1960's, and stretching for at least two series beyond the 885 AFAIK. I know there was also an 895, and a 4XXX tractor that bore a striking resemblence to each other, and the 885, under the sheet metal.

Perry: The 885 is IH design, it started with 74 series, then 84 series and on to 85 series. In the beginning (early 70s) it was only 574 and 674, then when it changed to 84 series 484, 584, 684, 784 and 884 were the lineup. 85 series had all the same sizes. Only IH tractors to become badged CaseIH, unchanged.

Nothing remotely David Brown or even Case about the tractor.
