Valve guides or rings?

Hello everyone, i have a 42 M that smokes at idle after warm. It's definitly a oil burn. Every once in awhile i have to add a little to top 'er off. Was planning on a engine rebuild sooner or later since it really doesn't bother me that it smokes a little. Was thinking about plowing with it this spring to work the rings a little and see what happens...soo....what would it be at an idle when warm...rings or valve guides? i'm not an expert so i'm asking the experts. Thank you-Ted

it dosnt really matter, as it most likely is both. when the engine gets pulled down for o/h im sure you will take it in for a valve job. you will be notifyed about guides, seats, valves, and possible head shave, and head will be checked for cracks.then you will have a heart attact when he tellls you that will take care of a 500.00 bill or more.but yes it is a good idea to give it a good work out in the field, could smarten it up some if its just been idling around the yard not reaching operating temp.

Most likelly a combination of worn guides, valve stems, rings, pistons, and sleeves. If you have decent oil pressure work the snot out of it, sometimes things free up with use.

Depending on how much you use the tractor and how much oil it uses, you may find the cost of adding oil to be a cheap alternative. I rebuilt my tractor and am glad I did, but I would have been money ahead to just keep on adding oil instead.
