Farmall H rear rims

I got some new rear rims for my H the other day. they are the kind where its just a blank rim that clamps onto the cast wheel center in several places around the wheel center. The guy I bought them from said something about welding on some reinforcement pads to the center of the rim wherever a clamp goes, but looking at the old rims there is no evidence of it ever having such a thing before. Is this really necessary? it seems like if you welded a bunch of plates around the inside of the rim, it would have trouble fitting over the wheel center because it would narrow the diameter. Any thoughts?

Will - I recently replaced rotted out rims on my Minnie Mo UTU. The new rims have a single lug about 3/16" plate steel lug welded to the inner diameter of the rim. This lug fits into a matching pocket cast into the OD of the wheel casting and prevents the wheel from "walking" around inside the rim.

I seem to remember seeing similar lugs/pockets on both my SH and SM. But it's been many years since I've had the rims off either one - so am not certain.

Perhaps this is what your rim guy is referring to??

There is a notch in edge of the hub that corrosponds to a little plate that is attached to the rim to keep the hub from spinning inside the rim. Other than that it is a rim without and other attaching points. The clamps hold the rim in.

Hey Zach, Is there a notch in the edge of the hub that corrosponds to a little plate that is attached to the rim to keep the hub from spinning inside the rim? :)

Sure enough, there is a notch in the wheel centers. No sign of any plates on the old rims though. They're pretty rotten so maybe the welds on the plates just rusted through and the plates fell off. Thanks for the input you guys.
