Got my Stuck Bolts

Got em out tonight. Had to blow off the head, and take the weight off, and then about an inch of the bolt inside the hole before it would move. 10 pound sledge and using a 3/4 bolt as a punch. They were stuck!

Thanks

Hi 1 Dollar,

Good, I am glad to hear you have them removed. Though a 10 pound sledge sounds a bit excessive. I like to drill them, then use an easy out to finish final removal, but sometimes they are rusted pretty bad. What did they go to? A 3/4" is a large bolt.

Wheel weight bolts on an M. Of the 2 wheel centers, 6 of the 8 came out no problem, and these two fought me for 2 hours. Must have spilled some salt water on them or something.

Yep, had to cut the two heads off to get the weight off the wheel. Finding new bolts may be a chore...

Square-heads are not too hard to come by. I ordered some originally from McMaster-Carr and they turned out to be Grade 2s.

Went back to work and found Earnest Machine Co. Great folks to deal with, don't mind small orders, and excellent serevice. The link is to their main page for square heads, available in Gr5 and Gr8.

I've experience those stuck wheel weight bolts. I screwed a nut half way on the end of the bolt and then another bolt into that nut. Then I used an 8 pound sledge hammer. Smaller hammer would not do it. screwing the bolts together like that saves the threads on the bolts so if not rusted too bad you can reuse them.
