H amp meter wiring 12 volt

I am finally at the point of reassembling my 47 H. It is converted to 12 volt and doesn’t have a voltage regulator. Should the three wires to the amp meter be reversed from the diagram in the operator’s manual? The book shows the switch and starter button wires going to the right/discharge side, looking from the back of the amp gauge, and the Generator/alternator wire on the left/charge side. This H was converted long before I got her and it wasn’t wire in reverse. The amp gauge didn’t work then. If I wire it wrong will it damage the new gauge or just read opposite? Thanks

Regardless if its a 3 terminal Voltage Regulator or the older style Cutout Relay, theres usually ONLY ONE wire on the ammeters SUPPLY terminal and that gets to the hot ungrounded battery feed usually via a wire down to the starter where the big batery cable attaches,,,,,,,,,The ammeters other LOAD terminal wires to the BAT terminal on a Voltage Regulator PLUS feeds hot battery voltage to loads like lights and ignition. IE the gennys output PLUS the loads all wire on the ammeters one terminal opposite the other supply terminal.

If it reads bass ackwards, simply reverse the leads. If its wired right if you turn on lights or ignition when shes not running the meter should swing to - discharge but then when running at RPM if shes charging it will swing to + charge, again, if it does opposite reverse the leads

No it wont damage it, just read bass ackwards

When they are converted from Pos to Neg ground the ammeter leads need reversed, of course
