1466 metal in the filter

i got a 1466 that gets real fine metal in the hyd filter. even plugs the filter and screen and the tractor stops moving and lose steering and brakes. its a silver looking metal. where should i start looking for problems? when i drive it I dont hear any extra noise or clunking or anything. everything works fine when the filter is not plugged. Also i want to say that the low side of the torque is out. Has been for a long time. But the high side works fine. thanks for your help.

IH Red, thats what the screen and filter are for. I have never changed one yet that hasn't had some "silver" in it. If everything is working fine keep your filter and screen changed and you will keep all that garbage out of valves etc. I wouldn't be too concerned just yet.

problem is that it plugs the filter and screen in just a few hours of running. i pulled off the 3 point cover and tryed to pry the differental around and has no movement. i pulled the mcv valve off the side and pryed the shafts and couldnt seem to find any bearings out. i took the cover off the side of the transmission ahead of the hyd pump and did the same with a prybar and everything seems tight. im looking for any ideas you guys might have. and apprieciate and info you have. thanks

IH Red, thats a whole different ball game..if just a few hours plug up a screen and filter you need to keep looking..I'm not familiar with your tractor but like I said any that I have changed the fluids in habve always had a little bit of filings in the screen and filter. Hopefully someone with a tractor like yours can fill us in..good luck with it

The shavings are comming from the low side of the torque. It does this when it shells out. You must do something to get these filings out of the oil. Draining the oil and changing it will not be enough. The torque should be repaired/replaced or a straight shaft put in. There are small pieces of metal that get through the screen and filter no matter how fine the filter is. These will scratch the valves on your multiple control valve that controlls your breaks, power steering and torque. The damage may already be done.

The bull pinion bearings are a possibility but my guess would be that the spider gears and pins in the differential are going out and that don't make much noise except some when making a sharp turn under load.

My guess is ring and pinion are going out.You can see it by takeing the top 3pt.bracket bolted to the rear housing off.

The rear end on our 1486 calfed last fall, the bearings on the bull pinion shaft went out, no warning of any kind, I just got done ploughing and headed down the road in 3rd high and BAM the whole thing stopped dead in its tracks. There I sat in the middle of the road and couldn't move. We had to put a new bull gear and bull pinion gear in, cost about $2000 plus bearings. best way to check bull pinon bearings is to pull the brakes off then your right at them, if it's a tractor you use alot and has some hours on it, might not hurt to renew them anyway. The funny thing is we takled about rebearing the rear end a couple months before.
Just thought I would share some experience I had.
