I finished restoring my 1955 300 rowcrop. When I start the tractor it will routinely spit a black liquid out the muffler. I am guessing that it is fuel but the tractor runs great, with the exception of the occassional miss when there is no load. I realize that the black is from the carbon but would like some enlightening on what the cause may be. Also it is not using any coolant as far as I can tell.

The black liquid is the result of cold running & incomplete combustion.
Get the engine up to proper temperature & work it; the black "stuff" will be gone.

Brad:

To sort of add to what Wayne said, does the stuff appear to be water-based or oil-based? It sort of sounds like it may be a suspension of carbon particles in water, which may be from condensation mixed with exhaust carbon.

Thanks, I had a suspicion (spelling???) that it was just condensation. It doesn't smell like gas and doesn't ruine the paint like gas would. Thanks guys

Brad, do you keep the tractor outside with the muffler uncovered? Throw an old beer can or small bucket over the end of the muffler if you don't have a rain flapper on it.
