starting a F-14 after warmed up

It starts on 3rd pull when cold. What is the secret to re-starting an F-14 after it has been shut off for 30 minutes. I usually end-up giving it a pull.

Sounds like you need to send your mag to a good rebuilder.I know this sounds stupid but let me guess,it will start within a few feet when you pull it.

Take a good look at the fuel system; It could be vapor lock, or a float & needle not working well and flooding the manifold/engine. Also, check the condensor as I have had tempermental ones before. Ususally it's a carb thing.

Your rite, pull it a foot and it starts. I just got it back from the mag shop who replaced the impulse and said the mag checked out good. When it starts I can usually hear the impulse click. When it decides not to start I do not hear the impulse. I usually only pull upwards w/mag sitting on the retard side of center. When it does not start after 4th crank I sometimes go ahead and push down on the crank when it is on top and it will start. Whats that tell you?

Thoes carbs are senative,Is your timing correct, you might want to move your mag just a little to see if it helps, mark your mag so you can put it back.Find your correct timming mark and see if itc clicking on the mark

Went through the same thing on mine. Started out being annoying and got steadily worse until it wouldn't start at all, even when towed.

I'd bet on the carb. When an old IH feller (used to be the New England Region Service Rep) explained it to me, I felt like a dummy: When the float adjustment gets off or the float gets fuel in it, the tractor floods. When it's cold, that's fine cuz the raw fuel from flooding is just like choking it, so you don't notice it.

When it's hot, the flooding fouls the plugs and it won't start. Towing it just fires the plugs hot enough and fast enough that it burns through the fouling.

I'd be lookin' real close at the carb if it was me.

Sounds like I need to be looking at the carb tomorrow. Has anybody ever heard of it starting on the downstroke rather than only cranking up?

Or mabe shut the fuel off to stop engine and turn it on when ready to start. Might keep engine from flooding.

The only thing I've ever heard about the down stroke is "OUCH" when it kicks back and dislocates your shoulder or breaks your wrist. You may not be giving it as sharp a pull up and if your mag impulse is not always snapping your "magman" needs to do a little more work; should snap EVERY time a cylinder comes up to TDC when cranking.

Itsounds like impulse may not be catching when you dont here it snap the first quarter turn hit the side of the mag with your fist a couple of times see if that helps may shake the impulse loose my f14 wont catch when cold might help

Since the carb is a down draft they are more sucesseptable to heat soaking from the manifold which can boil the gas in the bowl and cause it to spill into the carb throat. One thing you might try is to set the float just a tad lower. One thing I do on my F-12 is turn the gas off while it is running and let it run for a min or so then shut tractor down. Seems to help too.
