H clutch replacement.???

I have a l950 H that needs a clutch. It won,t move in 4th or 5th. My stupid question is do I have to spit the tractor to replace the clutch or can I do it by dropping the lift pump and replacing the clutch thru the hole. Where can we find a guide to replacing this clutch. This was my grandfathers last tractor with a 10-20 Titan being his first tractor. Thanks .

Robert you do not have to split the tractor. You can remove the hydraulic pump as you stated. I did it on my m and it wasn't a bad job at all.

Larry,

I agree Larry is right. Except now and then you get one which is extremely awkward and wont go back easily. If that happens come back on here for an explanation. Make sure the pressure plate is adjusted correctly before you put it all back together. MTF

Larry is right! I too did it on my M.
Also, I used a suggestion from this site to re-install the pump -- use 2 long pieces of threaded rod to slowly lift the heavy pump back in place.

An M and an H are two differnt tractors. I can do it on an M, but have never been able to do it on an H, although I have only tried once. I was told it ould be done on an H, and gave up trying after 3 hours of fighting to get it out. Took less time to split it than the amount of time I spent fighting with it.

You can find an I&T manual anywhere that sells tractor parts. If you look at the top of the left hand column on this page there is a link to tractor manuals.

The I&T and the IH manuals both asume that you have some idea of what you are doing. I see there is a Clutch Only manual. I don't have one and have no idea what they could be covering in 132 pages...

If I'm not mistaken I think you can but after you have removed the hyd pump you have to remove the pressur plate bolts so you can tip the clutch assemble enough to remove input shaft!! Be sure install the shaft before installing the pressure plate bolts when installing!!

H clutch comes out easy. Cap the clutch with three bolts if it is a rockford clutch, auburn forget it. The very last few H's had a 10 1/2 clutch and you had to split tractor, same as super H.

You can change the Super H clutch from underneath too. I speak from personal experience. The only thing that's a tight fit is getting the transmission input shaft past the coupler. Once you get the right angle on it, it slips right past, though.

After my last experience splitting I like to avoid it whenever possible. Dad's W400 would not go back together for love or money. After two days of struggling we only managed to get it down to the last 1/2". We finally had to get out the loader.

Does it try to move in 4th or 5th gear?

What about 3rd gear, does it not move when under load?

Does the clutch have free play?

Can you smell the clutch or does it smoke?

These questions need to be answered before tearing into the clutch.

Freeplay is free movement of the clutch pedal before it disengages the clutch. Usually the clutch pedal will move 1/2to 3/4 of an inch before any resistence is felt, this is what free play is. It has to be there, if not a simple adjustment is all that is necessary to obtain the freeplay.

If there is no free play the clutch will not be fully engaged and will slip under load.

I seen a young man come into the parts house one time and said he needed a clutch for a Chevy truck. He said it slips really bad and won't hardly take off from a dead stop.
I heard him tell the clerk that and I asked him if the pedal had any freeplay, the young man asked me what that was. Well to make along story short I went with him to his truck and made a simple adjustment and it was good to go. In this case a little knowledge went a far way.

Thank Guys for your replies. I'm glad to hear the tractor does't have to be split. There is loose play in the clutch peddle. Every summer we use the H to pull a produce stand to the road every morning, about 500 feet and back in the afternoon. 5th gear hasn.,t pulled for over a year, now 4 th won,t pull. This tractor has never had the head or base off in 59 years. I think its time for a clutch. We will let you know how we make out replacing the clutch...
