Noisy transmission

I have a 1948 Farmall Cub tractor that has developed a noisy transmission, don't know if its a bad gear or a bearing. It doesn't seem to make any difference what gear your in or in neutral the noise is still there. The IT manual says to remove all the parts thru the rear PTO housing. Does anyone know if this is correct? I have never had one apart. Any help would be appreciated.

Mike, that is pretty much the only hole in the transmission housing that the parts will fit through. Not sure if you can tear down the transmission without splitting the tractor and pulling both final drives, though.

I'll take a stab that it is noisy in 1st and reverse. It is the nature of the beast, there almost all noisy.

I had mine rebuilt at the I.H dealer with new bearings ,detent ball ,shift forks the hole smash and it is still loud.

There straight cut gears ! If i had to do it over i would replace all gears that have anything to do with 1st and reverse.

I found two years ago a 52 cub that had been tucked away in a barn for 30 years [ yes 30 years] "nice" and this transmission is dead silent. I'm guessing that is due to lack of use, i'm now the second owner of it.

If you go to www.farmallcub.com and ask this question you will more then likely get the same answer.

I have been running Royal Purple full syn 90 weight oil in the trans of my 55 that is loud and that sure seems to help let alone it shifts smooth.

In neutral, the only thing turning is the input shaft with the drive gears. Any noise in neutral just about has to be either the front or rear input shaft bearing. That shaft comes out the front of the transmission, requires splitting the tractor betweeen the transmission and bell housing.

If you do open it up, be sure to put the oil seal retainer back the right way. Put it on backwards and the shaft can move forward and give you a new batch of trouble.

Mite as well replace all the bearings if the noise seems too much for you. To rebuild the tranny it will have to be removed at the front and also have the finals removed then you can replace all worn parts and seals.

Did you check the oil in it? Mine started getting noisy and I just happen to check the oil and found it wasnt even coming out ofthe hole. Didnt know I had a seal leaking. Repalced seal, filled with gear oil and shes fine now.
