Oil seals in axle

Im replacing the rear seals in the axle of my farmall h.. its the outer oil seal.the one right in front of the ball bearings. anyways there is what looks like to be a felt seal in there behind the oil seal that fits into the housing with the grease fitting on it... DO I NEED THE FELT TYPE RING?? thanks

The felt is your call, the original seals did not have the outer dirt lip therefore they used the felt to keep dirt out of seal. New seals normally have the double lip, outer one to keep dirt out. If you crowd the new seal up against a felt you will effectively render that outer lip non existent. Will work fine eiether way.
