Does anyone know what wood couse this to happen. and is this a hard fix. there is a new rear housing on ebay right now $75.00 .what do you all think.thankyou all for your help

Chances are pretty good that a ball bearing let go at some point, and one of the balls got trapped between the bull gear and the housing. It made its own exit hole.
The obvious next question is....has there been any oil in that rear end since the hole was made?
Holes such as this can often be patched so they hold fluid, even if the patch isn't pretty. If the tractor was run very much without fluid in the rear end, the internal parts may be shot.

If it is repaired and the tractor operates good. if not, and the rest of the tracctor is good to better, no issue.
A bearing came apart in the rearend. Or the pinion bearing carrier was attempted to be removed W/O pulling the bull gear out of the way. Pieces of metal wedged between the Bull and case with the weakest part (case) exploding outward. Many are that way without issue. JimN

Most likely a ball popped out of a bearing and got pushed through by the bull gear like has been mentioned, Now that said, If a ball popped out, most likely all the bearings in the rear may be shot or on the way to being shot. It is fixable, but may cost a bundle of $$$$$ to do it. The cheap way would be find a good rear housing with the trans gears and everything and switch them out. The rear on my H was full of water when I got it and was very noisy even when new gear oil was put it. I ended up changing all the bearings in the rear and trans and I now have a very nice reliable H. An expensive H, but a reliable H. By the way, I have an H rear end, frame rails and partial bolster with no trans gears, but the rear diff and bull gears, rear rims and axels are in it. I will sell for $150 just to move it out of my way. Hate to scrap it. It will roll right up on a trailer if the front end is picked up. It is in west central Indiana 1/2 hour south of Terre Haute.

I see alot of H's in this area that have cracked rears. I bought a junker to fix the one I have. I just changed the whole rear. not a lot of room between the bull gear and the housing. and those ball bearing just make a mess.
