Need help with H steering shaft

The u joint in the steering shaft of my H is beyond shot. I would like to replace it befor mowing season is upon me. I for the life of me can not figure out how to take it apart. The end that has a bolt to loosen to take it off the shaft I understand. But how the heck do I take the other end of it apart? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I have never had one of these u-joint things apart. Dont want to take the entire steering shaft and light bar to town with me.

The left end yoke is welded on, and stays put. The whole thing comes apart by taking out the spider. New caps and spider should be available. In some cases, the best is the bench vise to drive the caps out. (might take removing the top steering post support with it. I would not pull the wheel off unless no option existed. JimN

I think you're going to have to remove the steering wheel. If the joint is the same as a Super C, you can get it at Nappa. Use a vice as a press with two sockets, one a size smaller than a cap and one socket that a cap will press into.

Loosen the clamp bolt and slide the the whole works back off of the front shaft. Clean the joint up and you will see the snap rings that hold the caps in place in the ears of the two halves of the joint. Remove the snap rings. You will need a large C clamp and two sockets, one to push against one of the cap ends (this one should be smaller than the OD of the cap) and another that is just large enough for the cap on the opposite end to pass inside of it as you press it out. Email me your phone # and I'll give you a call. It is much easier to describe the rest of the process.

Thanks for the reply. It"s going to be colder than a well diggers foot here this weekend. Soon as I get a day thats fit I"ll get out there and give it a try.
Thank you,
Paul

If that H is an early one, New parts for that U-joint are not available. You can however hack saw the old unit off the shaft and replace it with an aftermarket complete unit. The aftermarket unit requires drilling a couple of holes through the shaft and installing roll pins. Takes a bit of doing but really is not all that bad. I have installed a couple of them. One of those was on an H that was new enough for parts to be available, but it had been worn out for so long that it could not be rebuilt.
