Workin' on a dream (460 utility)

This little devil just arrived this afternoon via goose express.

It has the typical problems, rust in gas tank, inline fuel filter, power steering issues...but everything is "there". Loader works great, has downpressure and will lift the front of the tractor off the ground. It also has the shuttle-shift (reverser) and a 3 point + IPTO. The engine labors when the PTO is turned "off".

I can only get it to run about 3 minutes before it stalls, seemingly on 1 throttle setting and with full choke, I attribute this to fuel and carb problems.

Any ideas on how to ID the loader? The round tubes hint at Wagner but aren't an exact match, but I wouldn't know where to start looking...

FWIW, tires do not appear to be loaded. Hammering them with a fist reveals no sloshing at the top nor a "dead" sound...sounds "live" like there's just air inside.

That's a Wagner 260 loader, judging by the photos in a brochure I have. The Model 260 was designed for the 460U and has a 2500 lb lifting capacity. Cool tractor. I've got a Model 120 on my 240U, and the best I recall there's numbers stamped on the metal tubing on the right side up by the pivot.

Do you have a picture of the 3 point? Reason I ask is the only 460U I've ever seen with a 3 point was the experimental model that the company I worked for developed in the early '60s with IH. It was never put into production at that time, but IH later "developed" their own that had many of the features. I worked on it a little in late '65/early '66 when the tractor was sent to Oliver for evaluation. During testing, I pulled a 4x16" Oliver semi-mount in the field... never would have believed it could pull one that big.
I'm guessing this one has the external cylinders like the Fast Hitch?
Looks like this one will make a great project.

wasn't that tractor forale in the photo ads? anyway, if your angie labors with the PTO off, and it runs "fine" with it on, i would guess that the reactor bands are not set properly. i adjusted the bands on my 460HU, i did it wrong. i drove the tractor to my place to use the back hoe and it sputtered out like it ran out of gas. as it died i pulled out the choke and it smoked black, i knew it wasn't a fuel problem. i got off the tracotr when it died, and started to look around. what finally tipped me off was that the oil in the IPTO houseing was so hot i could hear it "bubbling" in the houseing. i turned on the PTO and it started and ran like a champ. i would sugjest getting a copy of the owners manual, or post on here about the reactor bands. jk
p.s. i used my 350u manual to adjust the reactor bands and i'm not sure to this day that its 100% correct

Here are a few more shots...the Binder manuals also arrived today! :D

I took off the carb this afternoon, split the halves, and dumped all of the nasty stuff out. Got some fresh gasoline and let a little flow...also some nasty stuff out of that. Then I had clear gas and got the tractor running smoothly on about 1/4 choke. It still isn't 100% right, but good enough for me to drive it around a little bit. Throttle and choke cables are still not working smoothly. I pitted it against the sod in once place and tore out a nice chunk...perfect!

This was formerly in the photo ads...you snooze, you lose 8)

My parts catalog shows a 3 point for the industrial version, no serial break, so I don't know if it was sold on the tractor from the factory or sold as an add on -- maybe that's the one you are talking about. I suppose his tractor could be an industrial.

(quoted from post at 23:32:14 02/25/09) here's the picture
I'm guessing this is a factory option on the 460U, similar to the one on the smaller 240U and 340U. I have also seen this on a later model that a local dealer had for sale a while back when Iwas looking for a loader tractor. I don't recall the model, but it has an external cylinder like the Fast Hitch.
The one I worked on would have been used on a later series of tractors, and had one of the best draft control systems I have ever seen, with all the controls in the top cover of the transmission. I believe Oliver may have incorporated some of the features also in a later series, because I was at Charles City with the engineer that held the patents on it. He said the company would most likely release it for them to copy whatever they wanted because the deal with IH was dead. The Oliver it was tested against at the time was a 1655, which I also ran during the field tests. I don't recall how much less HP the 460 had than the 1655, but the draft control was so much more effective on the experimental system that it handled the 4x16s as easily as the bigger Oliver. After testing at our field, it was sent to Charles City and came back "in a box" a year later. It was reassembled and sold to the engineer with the patents. Last I saw it, it sold at an auction after he passed away, probably 20 years ago.
