Which motor oil GRADE is best for Farmall H

I looked at the archives some and found use the oil to break in the motor that you plan on using all the time. Now to get technical. What sort of blend should I use. a 5W30 like in my car and truck or should I use a Rotella 15W40 like in my MD. This H wont be used for alot of heavy work(for now), mainly hauling a trailer with firewood and taking on tractor cruises. My usual brand of motor oil is Valvoline. Never any problems and that was what I was raised on. Please tell me what you think.

I think I'd run 10W30 or 10W40, whatever suits. I don't think 15W40 is going to hurt anything either.

Save the 5W in case you're going to do a lot of wintertime work.

Plain old SAE 30 is good as anything in it. I have used it year round for 35 years in all my tractors.

5W- oil is for more modern close-tolerance engines. Too thin for the H.

Anything 10W- or higher is fine, the thicker the better. I run 20W50 in one of my Cubs which has oil pressure problems after it gets warmed up. Unfortunately it didn't help much, and I'm still looking at at least a bearing job and possible complete tear-down of the engine.

SAE 30 you say? 35 years you say? You haven't spenr much of those 35 years in Canada (or close to it). In January in Manitoba there are few days you can even pour 30 oil!!

Nope. None of them. Been here in KY for almost 50 years. Even on the few times it gets to 20 below here I have always been able to get at least one tractor started. Usually a SC or the M. I run HD SAE 30 in my diesels too. When cold hits I plug the block heater in.
