M Carb Question

Ive just put it back together. It hasnt run for awhile.Give it new rings and rod bearings.Pull the choke as soon as you let it off it'll start, then immediately die, just wont stay running. The carb is getting gas seepage around the bowl gasket. If its sucking air there would that cause problems like a manifold gasket does? Thanks for any replies.Rob

If it is leaking gas at the bowl gasket, either the needle and seat are not holding, the float is set way too high, or the float is leaking. The fuel level in the bowl should be well below the gasket.

Ive already done everything You mentioned, and none of it makes any difference. The needle is shutting off.It doesnt leak out gas until You've tried starting it several times, then You will see the gasket getting wet, leakage around the front 2 bolts on the bowl, and seepage around the air/fuel screw. If the fuel level got that high it'd run out the suction side of the carb before it leaked out the top.It only shows up after You've been cranking awhile, and Im leaning towards a different carb.Thank You Guys for taking time to reply to me.

Sounds like you haven't touched the carb. Disassemble, soak in carb cleaner overnight, blow out with compressed air, make sure ALL passages are open, put a kit in and adjust to specs. Provided someone hasn't hit it with a hammer and cracked something, it will work. That is a very simple carb.

Was the carburetor functioning O.K. the last time it ran?

I've rebuilt a bunch of those M carburetors, never found a crack in any of them.

what are the specs for setting the carb. i just had mine rebuilt but its all messed up and after 15 min of idle the muffler is glowing red. after it gets warmed up it seems to run smooth, but when you shut it off it back fires and flames shoot out of bottom of muffler and hear it popping air or something back into the breather.

thanks for any help.

My book says the bottom load screw on the bowl 5 turns out,and the fuel air mix Id start with 2-3 turns out and adjust from there.I finally got mine started.I dont know why,but one more cleaning and reassemble, and re timed it again and it fired up.It is very touchy on timing,Its gotta be right on

The instructions included in a Case-IH carb kit call for 3 turns out on the bottom screw and 1 1/2 turns out on the low speed idle adjustment screw. That is how I set ALL of the carbs that I rebuild, and very seldom do any of them need any adjustment after installation.
