no spark on a B

I"ve had some great help from some on the board but I need a little more. I"ve set the timing using the rough method. Then I found the timing mark on the flywheel and lined it up with the pointer. I set the rotor to fire #1. Buttoned it up but still no spark at the plug. I then pulled the mag lead and set it next to the mag body and turned it over. Still no spark off of the mag lead. Then I pulled the ground wire off of the mag and tried it again. Still no spark.

So, first I"m curious if I"ve done these tests right? Second, if I"ve done it right, what do I look at next. I checked the points and they are at .13 and while they aren"t new they don"t look too bad. Any thoughts?

Eric, I am glade Bob had the pictures (they say a hundred words) to show you on the mag gears. I am not that good with the computer and pictures. Anyway I have a BN that gave me alot of trouble. It would start and run be when you shut it off I could not restart it when it was warmed up. Turned out to be the coil in the mag. If you have checked you points and all looks good not touching or grounded any where, Than I would change the coil. I disconnected my coil ran a hot lead from battery to a spair coil I had on the shelf, rigged it to the mag and mine fire rite up so I new it was the coil. oldiron29

You may want to start with a condenser first before replacing a $45.00 coil. There are a lot of little things that can go wrong with a H4 mag. But have you tryed a dif coil Wire? Is it a copper core wire not an auto type? Then like you said hold it about a 1/4" away from the brass nut that holds the kill wire and condenser in and give her a spin if no spark remove mag replace condenser. and retry. If you have an OHm meter I can some what tell you how to tell if your coil is dead or not first if you want. just email me at [email protected]

The only problem is I don't know how...Haha. I took everything apart once again, buffed up all of the connections I could find, pulled the mag apart to check for gounding, retimed it and it started on the first crank. Obviously something was wrong either my testing/timing or something was fouled. Perhaps I should have done each thing one at a time, but I'm just glad she works and I learned a lot too. I live in Colorado where it seems to be 8N territory so having all of you to troubleshoot with is a lifesaver. I could not have done it without all of you, thanks! By the way, the B purrs now.
