There's a tag on the left side of the clutch housing that has the serial # on it. If you can post that # we'll be able to help you more.

In addition to the serial number, casting date codes can help identify the year a tractor was assembled.

Look for date codes on the larger castings - engine block, head, torque tube, transmission, axle housings, etc. This code will tell you the day, month and year each part was poured at the foundry.

Generally castings found their way into a finished tractor 2 - 3 months after the pour date. So casting codes are usually pretty good for determining the model year of a tractor.

For a Super M the last character of the date code(the year code) will be an X, Y or Z. These correspond to 1952, '53 and '54 respectively. Year code letters lower in the alphabet correspond to earlier years.

Here is a typical code: 2-24-Y. This casting would have been poured on Feb 24, 1953.

A couple other quick Super M spotting features: 1 - Disc brakes (disk brakes will have cast iron covers vs. a regular M's stamped sheetmetal covers). 2 - The characters "C264" cast prominently into the upper right side of the block above the oil filter.

M should have a tin emblem on the grill that has F A R M A L L on it. The Super should have a smaller square one with the IH logo on it. Super M should also have disc brakes where the M has band type brakes.
