Cub Temp Gauge

I just bought a 1948 Cub and it does not have a temp gauge, there is a metal plate where it looks like the gauge would be. I this normal?
I guess if it overheats the driver will be the first to know.

They are not supposed to have a temp gauge. its a thermo siphon system so a gauge was not deemed not needed. However people have drilled and taped for one though over the years.

Yes it is normal. The Cubs were made without a temp guage. Run an unpressurized cap. Do not fill up higher than an inch below neck. The coolant will find its level after the first good workout.
